The "brain training" industry is worth over $8 billion, but the scientific evidence behind most products is thin. A 2016 consensus statement from the Stanford Center on Longevity and the Max Planck Institute concluded that most brain training games improve performance on the specific game you play — but do not transfer to real-world cognitive function. That said, a few types of cognitive training have stronger evidence than others. Here is what actually works and what does not.
What Works: Brain Training With Scientific Support
1. Reaction Time Tests — Moderate Evidence
Simple and choice reaction time tests measure — and with practice, improve — the speed of your visual-motor processing loop. The evidence for transfer is mixed: improving your reaction time on a click test makes you faster at that specific task, but does it make you a safer driver or better gamer? Probably yes for gaming (the skills are nearly identical), probably no for driving (real-world driving involves complex decision-making that a simple reaction test does not capture). Reaction time testing is most useful as a monitoring tool — tracking your scores over time can reveal fatigue, overtraining, or cognitive decline before you notice it subjectively.
2. Dual N-Back — Strongest Evidence for Working Memory
Dual N-back is the brain training task with the strongest evidence for far transfer. A 2013 meta-analysis in Psychonomic Bulletin & Review found that dual N-back training produced small but significant improvements in fluid intelligence, with larger effects for longer training protocols (20+ sessions). The task requires simultaneously tracking visual and auditory sequences and identifying when the current item matches the one from N steps back in both streams.
