Backward digit span (repeating the numbers in reverse order) declines more with age than forward span because it requires both storage and mental manipulation — you have to hold the numbers while rearranging them. This dual demand makes backward span a more sensitive measure of cognitive aging.

What Digit Span Actually Measures

Digit span is not a test of "how good your memory is." It specifically measures the phonological loop — the component of working memory that stores and rehearses verbal information. Think of it as your brain's audio buffer. When someone tells you a phone number and you repeat it to yourself until you can write it down, you are using your phonological loop.

This is different from visual working memory (tested by the sequence memory test where you remember visual patterns) and long-term memory (which digit span does not measure at all).
