Gridshot is the most popular aim training drill in the FPS community — popularized by Aim Lab and Kovaak's. The concept is simple: targets appear randomly on a grid, and you click them as fast as possible while maintaining accuracy. It simultaneously trains flick speed (moving quickly between distant targets), micro-corrections (small adjustments when you slightly miss), target switching (quickly moving to a new target after a kill), and click timing (precisely timing your shot).

Why Gridshot Is So Effective
Gridshot works because it isolates the pure motor component of aiming from game-specific variables. In a real FPS match, aiming is tangled up with movement, ability usage, map knowledge, communication, and mental pressure. Gridshot strips all of that away and leaves only: see target, move mouse, click target. This isolation allows for much higher repetition density — you can do 80–120 target clicks in a 60-second gridshot session, compared to maybe 15–25 aim duels in a full competitive FPS match.
The transfer to in-game performance is well-documented in the community. Consistent gridshot training (5–10 minutes daily) typically improves in-game accuracy by 3–8% and headshot percentage by 2–5% within 2–4 weeks. The improvement is most dramatic for players below Diamond/Platinum rank — once your fundamentals are solid, gridshot becomes maintenance rather than progression.
Gridshot Benchmarks (30-Second Session)
- 20–30 targets: Beginner. Focus on accuracy over speed — aim for 90%+ even if it means going slow.
- 35–45 targets: Intermediate. Solid fundamentals, starting to build speed. Typical Gold–Platinum FPS player range.
- 50–60 targets: Advanced. Diamond–Ascendant level aim. Fast flicks with controlled micro-corrections.
- 65–80 targets: Elite. Immortal–Radiant territory. Near-instant target acquisition with minimal accuracy loss at high speed.
- 80+ targets: Professional / top 0.1%. Requires years of dedicated aim training. At this level, mouse control is so automatic that the bottleneck becomes visual processing speed, not motor execution.
How to Train Gridshot Correctly
Most people train gridshot wrong. They chase high scores by sacrificing accuracy — 120 targets with 70% accuracy looks impressive but builds sloppy habits. The correct progression:
- Phase 1 (Weeks 1–2): Accuracy only. Go as slow as needed to hit 95%+ accuracy. Speed does not matter. You are building clean motor patterns.
- Phase 2 (Weeks 3–4): Speed with accuracy floor. Push speed while keeping accuracy above 90%. When accuracy drops below 90%, slow down. The 90% floor is non-negotiable.
- Phase 3 (Week 5+): Push both. Try to increase targets hit while maintaining 88–92% accuracy. At this point, occasional misses are acceptable — you are pushing your ceiling.
Train gridshot for 5 minutes, then follow it with 5 minutes of reaction time testing. The combination of aim precision and raw visual reaction speed is what translates to in-game performance. Track both scores over time — the trend line matters more than any single session.
