1. Sleep Deprivation (+30–80 ms)
This is the single biggest controllable factor. After 24 hours without sleep, reaction time slows by 30–50%. 4. Dehydration (+10–25 ms)
Losing just 2% of body weight in water slows reaction time by 10–20 ms. Dehydration reduces blood volume, which decreases oxygen delivery to the brain. The effect starts before you feel thirsty — by the time thirst signals fire, you are already 1–2% dehydrated and operating below peak. Drink 200–300 ml of water per hour during active testing or gaming.
5. Alcohol (+50–200+ ms, Lasts 12+ Hours)
Alcohol slows reaction time dramatically. At BAC 0.08% (legal driving limit in most countries), reaction time is typically 30–50% slower — a 200 ms baseline becomes 260–300 ms. 6. Physical Fatigue From Exercise (−10 to +20 ms)

8. Screen Fatigue From Blue Light (+10–20 ms)
Staring at screens for hours before testing fatigues the ciliary muscles in your eyes and reduces blink rate by 60%, causing dry eyes and blurred vision. Both add milliseconds to visual reaction time. The fix: the 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It sounds trivial but measurably reduces digital eye strain.
9. Device and Connection Latency (+10–100 ms)
Your hardware can add more delay than your nervous system. Bluetooth mice add 10–40 ms. 60 Hz monitors add up to 16 ms of display lag versus 144 Hz. Touchscreens add 20–50 ms versus a wired mouse. 10. Time of Day — Circadian Rhythm (+10–20 ms)
Reaction time follows a predictable daily curve. Most people are slowest in the early morning (6–8 AM) and fastest in the late afternoon (4–7 PM), with a post-lunch dip around 1–3 PM. The difference between peak and trough is typically 10–20 ms. Quick Checklist Before Testing
If you want your most accurate baseline, control for as many of these as you can. Here is what an optimal testing window looks like:
- 7–8 hours of sleep the night before
- Test between 4–7 PM (circadian peak for most people)
- Well-hydrated — clear or pale yellow urine
- No alcohol in the last 24 hours
- Moderate caffeine 30–60 minutes before, if you normally consume it
- Desktop computer with wired mouse, 120+ Hz monitor
- Quiet room, no distractions
- Take 5 attempts and use the average — discard any false starts
