Three Types of Reaction Time — All Different
A good simple reaction time does not guarantee a good choice reaction time. They measure different things:
- Simple RT: One stimulus, one response. "Click when you see green." This is the number people usually quote. It taps the raw sensory-motor pathway with minimal brain processing.
- Choice RT: Multiple stimuli, selective response. "Click the highlighted target among five." Slower by 50-100 ms because your prefrontal cortex has to identify, discriminate, and select. This is what matters in real life.
- Sound RT: Auditory stimulus, motor response. Faster than visual by 20-40 ms because sound reaches the brain in 8-10 ms vs. 20-40 ms for vision. Sprinters react to the gun for this exact reason.
A balanced profile across all three modes matters more than a single cherry-picked score. Someone with 240 ms simple RT and 260 ms choice RT has better real-world speed than someone with 180 ms simple RT and 320 ms choice RT. The second person has fast hardware but slow software.
How to Know Your Real Score
Never trust a single attempt. Reaction time fluctuates. Run the test 5 times and take the median — your first attempt is usually the slowest (warm-up effect), and random outliers happen. The median of 5 trials gives a more honest number than cherry-picking your best.
Also, test at the same time of day for tracking trends. Morning scores and evening scores can differ by 20-30 ms due to fatigue. Consistency in testing conditions matters more than any single number.
What Good Looks Like in Real Situations
Numbers on a screen are one thing. Here is what those numbers mean in contexts that matter:
Driving
At 60 mph, a 250 ms reaction time means you travel 22 feet before your foot even moves to the brake. A 350 ms reaction time means 31 feet. Nine extra feet at highway speeds can be the difference between a near miss and a collision. Most highway safety guidelines assume a 1.5-second total response time (perception + movement). If your simple reaction time is above 350 ms, your total driving response is likely above 2 seconds — leave extra following distance.
Gaming
In Valorant or CS2, a duel between two players with equal aim comes down to who clicks first. A 160 ms player beats a 200 ms player roughly 65-70% of the time in a pure reaction duel — not because the 200 ms player is bad, but because 40 ms is the entire window between winning and losing. At the pro level, where everyone has good aim, reaction time is one of the few remaining differentiators.
Everyday Life
Catching a falling phone, dodging a bicycle on the sidewalk, grabbing a cup before it tips — these are all reaction time. Most people never measure theirs, so they have no idea where they stand. A 300 ms reaction time is perfectly fine for daily life. But knowing your number gives you a baseline. If it starts slipping month over month, you have an early warning that something is off — sleep, stress, or something worth mentioning to a doctor.
