Use your arrow keys on desktop, or swipe on mobile, to move all tiles on the 4×4 grid. Every move shifts every tile in that direction. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their sum — a 2 and a 2 become a 4, two 4s become an 8, and so on. After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) spawns in a random empty cell.

1. Pick a Corner and Stick to It
The single most important 2048 strategy: keep your highest-value tile in one corner at all times. Most players choose the bottom-right or bottom-left corner. Never move your highest tile out of that corner unless you have no other choice. Build your tile hierarchy outward from that corner — the corner holds your largest number, the adjacent cells hold the next largest, and so on in descending order.

3. Never Move "Up" (If Your Corner Is Bottom)
Once you have committed to a bottom corner, avoid swiping up unless absolutely necessary. An upward move can spawn a 2 or 4 tile below your carefully positioned high-value tile, forcing you to choose between breaking your corner or letting your board fill up. Use left, right, and down moves 95% of the time. Only swipe up when the board is completely blocked and you have no other legal move.
4. Keep Your Highest Row Full
The row containing your corner tile should never have empty spaces. An empty cell in your anchor row risks spawning a small tile that disrupts your merge chain. Fill that row by merging into it, and only clear it by merging within it. If both bottom rows are full, you have maximum control over where new tiles can appear.
5. Plan 2–3 Moves Ahead
Before each swipe, scan the board and predict where every tile will land. Ask yourself: will this move create a merge I want? Will it expose my corner? Will it open space for a helpful merge next turn? After about 20–30 games, this forward-planning becomes automatic. Top players think in merge chains — setting up a merge that, when executed, creates another merge on the next turn.
