How to Play Tetris
Seven different tetrominoes (shapes made of 4 blocks) fall from the top of the screen one at a time. Use arrow keys to move and rotate them — left/right to position, down for soft drop, up to rotate. Your goal: arrange the falling pieces to form complete horizontal rows. When a row is fully filled with blocks, it disappears and everything above shifts down. The game ends when the blocks stack up to the top of the screen. Points increase with each line cleared — clearing 4 lines at once (a Tetris) earns the maximum bonus.
Tetris Strategy — How to Score Higher
1. Build Flat, Not Tall
The most common beginner mistake: stacking blocks unevenly creates gaps that become impossible to fill. Keep your surface as flat as possible. A flat surface means every new piece has a place to land. Prioritize filling holes over chasing line clears.
2. Save the I-Piece for Tetris Clears
The long straight I-piece (4 blocks in a line) is the most valuable tetromino — it is the only piece that can clear 4 lines at once. Leave a column open on one side (usually the far right) specifically for I-pieces. When you get one, drop it into that column for an instant 4-line Tetris clear worth maximum points.
3. Rotate Before Positioning
Rotate pieces before moving them into tight spaces. A piece that looks like it will not fit in one orientation may slot in perfectly after rotation. Pro players mentally rotate pieces during the fall to decide positioning before the piece reaches the stack.
4. Use the Hold Feature (If Available)
Some Tetris versions let you hold one piece for later. If you get a piece you cannot use immediately, hold it. Save I-pieces for Tetris clears. Never hold the same piece twice in a row — holding resets your hold timer and wastes future opportunities.
5. Speed Management in Late Game
As levels increase, pieces fall faster. At level 10+, you cannot think about each piece individually — you must react on instinct. This is where all your practice pays off. Focus on keeping the stack low and flat; your hands will learn the rotations automatically with enough repetition.
